You booked the appointment, followed the aftercare notes, and left with skin that finally looks the way you hoped. Then you go to sleep. For the next eight hours your face rests against whatever pillowcase you already own, and for most people that is cotton.
In the days between appointments, the surface you sleep on is one of the few things about your skin's overnight hours you fully control. Here is what changes when that surface is silk, mechanism by mechanism, and just as honestly, what a pillowcase cannot do.
After a treatment, friction and the bacteria on your pillowcase matter most
Skin can feel more sensitive in the days after a facial, a peel or an in-office treatment, and the surface it rests on for eight hours is worth a closer look. Two things about a pillowcase matter here: how much it drags against your skin, and how much oil and bacteria it lets collect on the fabric. Start with friction. Cotton grips and drags, so every time you turn your head the fabric pulls at your face. Across a full night that adds up to hours of low, repeated rubbing against a rough, dry surface.
Silk glides instead. ZILK pillowcases are woven from 25-momme mulberry silk, long continuous fibers with a naturally smooth surface, so your skin slides across the fabric rather than catching on it. Less friction means a gentler night for skin that already feels reactive.
Your evening products should stay where you put them
Cotton is built to absorb. That is why towels are made of it. The same quality that dries your hands pulls the serum and moisturizer you applied at night off your face and into the pillowcase.
Silk absorbs far less. Whatever you or your provider recommended for the evening stays on your skin through the night, which is the whole reason you applied it before bed.
A fresher surface, night after night
No product sits against your face for eight hours. Your pillowcase does, every single night. That alone makes it worth choosing well.
A pillowcase collects what a night leaves behind: oil, product residue and the bacteria that build up on any sleep surface. ZILK features Silvadur™ technology to inhibit the growth of bacteria on the fabric surface. Silver ions are bound into the silk fiber itself, so when bacteria land on the fabric the ions attach to them and interrupt their ability to grow and multiply. Because the technology lives in the fiber rather than sitting on top as a coating, it does not wash out.
The pillowcase is machine washable, and a weekly wash in a mesh laundry bag keeps that surface doing its job.

Cooler through the night
Mulberry silk regulates temperature naturally. It moves heat away from your skin instead of trapping it, so you sweat less overnight. For skin that feels warm after an appointment, a cooler surface simply feels better against your face.
What a silk pillowcase will not do
This is the honest part. A silk pillowcase is not aftercare. It does not heal your skin, it does not replace a single instruction from the professional who treated you, and it is not a medical device. If your provider gave you guidance for the days after your appointment, that guidance comes first, every time.
What a pillowcase changes is smaller and real: the surface your face rests on for a third of the day. Less friction, less product loss, a fresher surface and a cooler night. For skin in a sensitive stretch, taking away overnight aggravation is a reasonable thing to want, and it is a change you make once.
That honesty is where ZILK comes from. It was founded by Elizabeth Cook, PA-C, who has practiced in dermatology and aesthetics for 15 years and performs treatments like lasers, peels and injectables daily at her own med spa. She watched patients invest in their skin by day, through careful routines and the treatments they value most, then undo some of that care on a cotton pillowcase overnight.
How to choose a silk pillowcase for sensitive, post-treatment nights
Look for 25-momme weight, the density that makes silk durable and opaque rather than thin. Look for 6A grade mulberry silk, the longest and most uniform fibers. Look for Oeko-TEX Standard 100 certification, which verifies the fabric has been tested for harmful substances, a detail that matters more when your skin is reactive. And confirm it is machine washable, because a pillowcase you cannot wash often cannot stay fresh.
